Packing for the hospital or birth center

Let’s take the guesswork out of packing! Yes, you really only need yourself, your partner or support people, and all the skills you’ve learned. And yet, a well-stocked hospital bag can make life easier. Here are some of the items you may want to pack:
Journey to the hospital or birth center:
Some waterproofing in your car. Disposable “super-absorbent underpads” (also called bed pads) are great, and you can use them for your baby later. But you can use any waterproof liner, such as a shower curtain. Have several clean towels handy. Membranes can release in the car and you'll be ready.
Hand sanitizer and/or sterile gloves should the baby decide to come early
Sleep eye mask
Phone (and/or device with digital tracks loaded), headphones.
For the birthing day:
Birth preferences (multiple copies are good) and any necessary paperwork and documents including photo ID, insurance card, and list of current medications.
HypnoBirthing spiral notebook, HypnoBirthing door sign + painter's tape, digital tracks or any other music of your choice.
Comfortable clothes you’ll wear during birth (labor and delivery gown or a bra...unless you're not planning to wear anything--also a good choice!). Extra socks with a non-slip grip on the bottom may be nice.
Water bottle with a straw
Snacks (dads get hungry too--and you may be very hungry after your baby arrives), juice, honey sticks
Any props you plan on using. Pillows, birth balls, blanket, aromatherapy, tennis ball, scarf for belly support
Hair ties or headband to keep hair off your face
Lip balm
Hot or cold packs, especially if using them for comfort at home
Some clients really like having a portable fan
For your stay and trip home:
Nursing-friendly PJs or lounging clothes (e.g., with front opening), and a nursing bra or two
Disposable underwear like Depend or Always (many are scented, so check/select sensitive skin option)—or underwear and pads.
Breast pads, Silverette nipple covers
Nursing pillow, if plan on using
Moisturizers, shampoo and conditioner, face cleanser, hairbrush – whatever will make you feel refreshed, clean and happy
Witch hazel lotion or pre-moistened pads (your hospital may provide these).
Comfortable clothes and roomy shoes for the trip back (feet can be swollen for a few days after birth).
Clothes for the baby
Diapers, if plan on using a brand or style that a hospital won’t carry
Plastic bags for dirty clothes and extra stuff that hospitals may provide
Baby car seat
Phone chargers (consider an extra-long charger or a charged power bank)
Gifts for nurses/staff, if you'd like to thank the staff. You could consider healthy, individually wrapped snacks to share when you arrive
