Perineal massage is commonly believed to support stretching and reduce the likelihood of tearing. Just as (or, perhaps, even more) importantly, it helps mom practice relaxing and letting go with the sensation she will feel as her baby’s head moves down. Whether it's tingling, bit of warmth, or something else, the sensation of tissues stretching and unfolding becomes familiar.
For anyone new to the term, the perineum is the soft, stretchy area between the vaginal opening and the anus. During birth, this tissue gently thins, opens, and expands as your baby’s head moves down and is born.
Many midwives and providers suggest starting around 34–35 weeks of pregnancy. Even once or twice a week can be enough to begin building that sense of familiarity and ease.
Perineal massage can be done by pregnant people or, often more comfortably, with the support of a partner.
As with anything in pregnancy, it’s always a good idea to check in with your provider and make sure it feels like a good fit for you and your body.
